11 VIDBE-Q Volume 63 Issue 2 Holli Luff The Ohio State University Council for Exceptional Children Division on Visual Impairments and Deafblindness Presents 2018 Awards At International Conference in Tampa, FL The Council for Exceptional Children, Division on Visual Impairments and Deafblindness (DVIDB) is proud to present the Dissertation of the Year Award to Dr. Karen Koehler at the Council for Exceptional Children Convention and Expo in Tampa, Florida, on February 8, 2018. The Dissertation of the Year Award is presented to a DVIDB member who makes a significant contribution to the field through extensive study and research. Dr. Koehler has researched the unique subject matter of 3-D printing and its use by students in a science classroom. As many have heard, 3-D printing has been speculated to be able to revolutionize the learning that will take place in science classrooms all over the country and dramatically increase student learning; especially the learning of students with visual impairments. Many have speculated that this technology will have dramatic abilities to increase access to the general education classrooms by students with visual impairments. However, those claims had little to no research to back them up. Karen's dissertation work and pilot study, reported in the dissertation, finally provided some insight into the use of 3-D printed models and student learning. Her dissertation was timely and of great importance to our field. Dissertation of the Year: Dr. Karen Koehler
