The "fun stuff" was added, in part, because the teens learned how to use their Trekker GPS
so quickly—in some cases they were teaching the counselors things we hadn't yet discovered
about the system. Spending time with Leader Dogs in training was an added feature
suggested by the campers; for some, it was their favorite part of the week.
Though "hanging out" with dogs is fun, the campers actually spend the day with our guide
dog mobility instructors (GDMIs) who teach them about the responsibility of having a guide dog
and how the dogs can, and cannot, assist with travel. The GDMIs give the teens a chance to
"test drive" a Leader Dog to get the feel of how quickly and fluidly travel with a guide dog can
be.
