school week was shortened from 6-days to the traditional five in 1929.
A new facility for the school was built in 1952, with a wing added in
1993 to provide special classrooms for life skills students. Residential
students were moved out of dormitories into cottages in 1993 as well. The
more home-like accommodations, including a kitchen, family room, and
private bath per two person room, were welcomed by the students, and are
still in use today.
The Donelson/Nashville community generously supports the Tennessee
School for the Blind. In 1997, Ralph Brewer, alumnus and former teacher and
superintendent, created the Friends of TSB, a 501 (c) 3 organization that
made its mission to provide enriching programs and equipment to enhance
the educational and social development of TSB students. Friends has
garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars which have benefited the school
with field trips, technologically, a bowling alley, bicycles, and a music therapy
resonating floor. The Friends has sent several students each year to NASA's
Space Camp and Academy in Huntsville, Alabama, and provided funds
annually for senior class members to enjoy a December ski trip to Colorado.
