Role of contributing factors. One of the benefits of a study that uses think aloud is that
reasons for performance can be investigated more closely by analyzing what the students were
saying and doing. Table 3 lists some of the emerging results from analyzing the think aloud sessions
of the 11 participants who used tactile graphics. Student performance was coded based on the
contributing factors illustrated in Figure 1. In particular, looking at whether performance seemed to
be more influenced by the strategies students used, the content knowledge and experience the
students had, and the role of the quality of the graphic itself.
