Message from the Guest Editor: Kathleen Farrand, M.Ed., Doctoral Student at The Ohio State University Welcome to the Summer 2013 issue of DVIQ entitled "Gearing up for the New School Year." This issue is devoted entirely to getting ready for the beginning of the school year. In the following pages, you will find topics including teachers' perspectives, physical education for residential students, using social media to chat with colleagues, utilizing technology with students with VI, ways to support students with Deafblindness, and inventiveness. This issue of DVI-Q includes a total of seven articles. The authors of the articles are experts from across the U.S. and address topics for teachers getting ready to begin the school year. The articles provide strategies meant to challenge you to reach higher as you prepare for the school year. This issue will begin with an article from a new pre-service teacher describing why she chose to get into the field of visual impairments. These articles are to remind those of you already in the field why you chose to be a part of this unique field of education in your quest to making a difference. 4
