toward the 350-hour certification requirement while gaining hands-on experience
in a residential transition setting. They arrive five days before student move-in to
learn the Phoenix area, explore public transportation systems, build relationships
with supervisors, and become familiar with student needs and program procedures.
During the first week, interns observe and co-teach before gradually moving into
direct instruction during Weeks two through five. They receive ongoing guidance
and feedback from certified O&M supervisors and are provided housing, a weekly
stipend for breakfast and lunch expenses, and dinner each evening.
Student applications open in early December. Students must be in grades 9
through 12 when applying. To be eligible, students must be actively participating
in VR services, complete the FBC Summer Program application, and participate in
an interview. Students must also be able to independently manage personal
medications, maintain personal hygiene, dress themselves, wake up using an alarm
clock, and self-regulate their behavior in a residential setting. Students apply for
one of two tracks: Teen to Work or College Prep. While each program has
different goals, both emphasize the expanded core curriculum and provide
opportunities for students to apply skills across instructional, residential, and
community environments.
The Teen to Work program focuses on employment preparation, assistive
technology, independent living, and travel skills. Students develop resumes, cover
