that meaningful concept development and exposure to new information and
ideas occurs in unique and individualized means of "reading" or writing".
Meaningful opportunities might include sharing an "experience book" filled
with tactile objects from a trip to the park or grocery store or assisting to
assemble a daily calendar of activities at the beginning of the school day.
These opportunities can only be determined by getting to know a student and
truly understanding their interests and motivators and the behaviors that they
use to communicate with others.
This literacy webinar in January will explore the importance of
emergent literacy development, specifically for children and youth who are
deafblind and not yet proficient communicators, and learn that symbols have
meaning. Suggestions for when and how to plan and provide meaningful
literacy instruction both at school and home will be offered, including specific
examples of ways and times to include emergent literacy activities in a
student's instructional day. Participants will also learn about multiple
available internet resources to add to their "teacher toolkit" for use when
instructing and evaluating the needs and growth of these unique students
and to promote the abilities, confidence, and interest of their students to
communicate and connect with others and their world.
